A fire broke out overnight into Friday in a multi-family house in Berlin-Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, and the entire building had to be evacuated. Police said two people were injured.

According to initial findings, the blaze started in a third-floor apartment. The refrigerator there is believed to have ignited the fire. Emergency crews took the 63-year-old resident of that apartment to hospital. A second person was slightly injured.

The affected apartment is not habitable for the time being. The other residents were able to return to their homes after the evacuation. Berlin's state criminal police office, the Landeskriminalamt, has opened an investigation into the cause of the fire.
